Reasonable expectations doctrine
Term · Insurance and risk management · MLC-T-INS-002809
A legal principle in insurance contract interpretation stating that policyholders are entitled to the coverage they would reasonably expect to receive based on the policy's language and the insurer's representations, even if a strict reading of the policy might suggest otherwise. This doctrine protects consumers from unexpected exclusions or limitations that are not clearly communicated. It is often applied in cases where policy language is ambiguous.
