Captain of the ship doctrine

A legal principle, primarily in medical malpractice cases, that holds a surgeon or lead physician responsible for the actions of all personnel assisting in an operation. This doctrine assigns vicarious liability to the supervising professional for the negligence of those under their direct control. It has been largely superseded by modern theories of corporate liability and shared responsibility.
