Rights of residents

The legal protections guaranteed to people who live in nursing homes and other long term care facilities, set by the federal Nursing Home Reform Act of 1987 and state law. They include the right to a dignified existence, self-determination, freedom from abuse and unnecessary restraints, privacy, and participation in care planning. The federal rules sit in Subpart B of 42 CFR Part 483, which governs facilities that take part in Medicare or Medicaid.
