Medicare set-aside

A financial arrangement that allocates funds from a workers' compensation or liability settlement to pay for future medical expenses related to the injury that would otherwise be covered by Medicare. This mechanism protects Medicare's interests by preventing it from paying for medical care that should be covered by the settlement. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) reviews and approves these arrangements for settlements exceeding certain thresholds.
