Accountable care organization (ACO)

A group of healthcare providers, including doctors, hospitals, and other clinicians, who voluntarily come together to give coordinated high-quality care to their Medicare patients. The goal is to avoid unnecessary duplication of services and medical errors. If an ACO meets quality standards and reduces healthcare costs, it shares in the savings generated for the Medicare program.
