Surplus lines insurance

Coverage for risks that authorized or admitted insurers in a state are unwilling or unable to underwrite due to their unique nature, high hazard, or unusual characteristics. This insurance is placed with non-admitted insurers through specially licensed surplus lines brokers. It provides a market for specialized risks that do not fit standard underwriting guidelines, such as certain types of professional liability or unique property exposures.
