Underwriting period

An initial period after a new policy takes effect, set at 60 days in most states and 45 in others, during which the insurer can cancel for nearly any reason, after reviewing the application, driving record or inspection results. After the period ends, cancellation is restricted to statutory grounds such as nonpayment of premium or fraud.
