Accrual method of accounting

An accounting method where revenues and expenses are recorded when they are earned or incurred, regardless of when cash is actually exchanged. This method provides a more accurate picture of a company's financial performance over a period. Most large businesses are required to use the accrual method for tax and financial reporting purposes.
