Administrative law judge

A presiding officer who conducts hearings and makes findings of fact and law in administrative proceedings. This individual is employed by a government agency and acts as an impartial decision-maker, similar to a judge in a court of law. Their decisions are subject to review by the agency head or by a court.
An officer in a regulatory or social service agency, such as the Department of Labor or the Social Security Administration, who decides disputes under the laws and regulations administered by the agency, subject to appeals to the Article III courts.
