Adverse possession

A legal doctrine allowing a person to claim ownership of land by openly occupying it for a statutorily defined period, even without the owner's permission. The possession must be actual, open, notorious, exclusive, hostile, and continuous for the entire statutory period. This period varies by state, often ranging from 5 to 20 years.
