Opposed, contrary, or hostile, often referring to a claim or interest that conflicts with another. In property law, an adverse claim challenges the validity or extent of another's title. Adverse possession is a legal doctrine where a person can acquire title to land by occupying it openly and hostilely for a statutory period.
