Automatic stay

A court order that immediately halts most collection activities against a debtor upon the filing of a bankruptcy petition. This legal injunction prevents creditors from pursuing lawsuits, foreclosures, repossessions, and wage garnishments. The automatic stay is a fundamental protection provided by the United States Bankruptcy Code, specifically Section 362.
An injunction that usually comes into force automatically when a bankruptcy case is filed. This stops actions such as lawsuits, foreclosures, garnishments, and most collection activities against the debtor and property of the bankruptcy estate.
