Best evidence rule

A legal principle requiring that the original document, photograph, or recording be presented in court when its contents are at issue. This rule aims to prevent fraud and inaccuracies that could arise from the use of copies or secondary evidence. Exceptions exist, such as when the original is lost or destroyed without bad faith.
