A section of a prison that houses inmates sentenced to death while their appeals and other legal challenges proceed and until the sentence is carried out, commuted, or overturned. Unlike general prison housing, it typically confines each inmate to a single cell with limited time outside it, and the wait for execution in the United States averages more than a decade.
