Stay of execution

A court order that temporarily suspends the enforcement of a judgment, most notably a death sentence. This delay is granted to provide a defendant with time to pursue further legal options, such as an appeal or a petition for a writ of habeas corpus. A stay can be issued by the trial court, an appellate court, or a supreme court, including the Supreme Court of the United States.
