The permanent cessation of all biological functions that sustain a living organism. In a legal context, death can be determined by the irreversible cessation of circulatory and respiratory functions or by the irreversible cessation of all functions of the entire brain, including the brainstem. The legal definition of death has implications for inheritance, life insurance, and organ donation.
