The United States federal executive department tasked with managing the nation's foreign policy and international relations. Led by the Secretary of State, the Department of State (DOS) operates embassies and consulates, negotiates treaties, and represents the U.S. at the United Nations. It is also responsible for issuing passports to American citizens and visas to foreign nationals wishing to enter the country.
