Disbarment

The revocation of an attorney's license to practice law, ordered by a state's highest court as the most severe sanction for serious misconduct such as fraud, theft of client funds, or conviction of a serious crime. A disbarred lawyer cannot practice or hold out as an attorney, and in most states can petition for reinstatement only after a waiting period of several years.
