Ejusdem generis
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-001819
A canon of construction for interpreting statutes and contracts, meaning "of the same kind." Under this principle, when a list of specific items is followed by general words, the general words are construed to be restricted to the same class as the specific items. For example, in a statute covering "cars, trucks, motorcycles, and other motor vehicles," the phrase "other motor vehicles" would be interpreted to include vehicles like vans but not airplanes.
