Sui generis
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-004763
Relating to a legal case, right, or entity that is unique and does not fit into an established classification. A sui generis matter is of its own kind, requiring a novel legal analysis or the creation of a specific legal category. For example, certain intellectual property rights, like those protecting database contents in the European Union or semiconductor topographies, are treated as sui generis and are governed by specific statutes rather than general copyright law.
