Subsume

To absorb or include a more specific legal rule, concept, or set of facts within a broader, more general one. The larger principle or category then governs the legal analysis of the specific instance, making a separate analysis of the smaller element unnecessary. For example, in a criminal case, a lesser included offense is subsumed within the greater offense if all its elements are also elements of the greater crime.
