Elements (of a case)

The individual factual or legal components that must be proven by a party to establish a particular claim, defense, or cause of action in a lawsuit. Each element is a prerequisite for a court to find in favor of the party asserting the claim. For instance, the elements of negligence include duty, breach, causation, and damages.
