Cause-in-fact

The actual, direct causal link between a defendant's act and a plaintiff's injury, often determined by the 'but for' test. This test asks whether the injury would have occurred but for the defendant's conduct. It is one of two components of causation required to establish liability in tort law, alongside proximate cause.
