Proximate cause

A legal cause of an injury or damage, without which the injury or damage would not have occurred. It is the cause that is sufficiently related to an injury to be considered the cause of that injury in law. This concept limits a defendant's liability to those harms that are a reasonably foreseeable consequence of their actions.
