But-for cause
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-000814
A factual cause of an injury or harm, meaning that the injury would not have occurred in the absence of the defendant's actions. This is the initial step in establishing causation in tort law, requiring a direct link between the defendant's conduct and the plaintiff's damages. If multiple independent causes could have produced the same result, the but-for test alone may be insufficient.
