Intervening cause

An event or act that occurs after the initial negligent act of a defendant and before the plaintiff's injury, which contributes to the injury. If this subsequent event is unforeseeable and breaks the chain of causation between the defendant's negligence and the harm, it may relieve the defendant of liability. This concept is a defense in tort law.
