But-for test

A standard used in tort law to determine factual causation, asking whether the plaintiff's injury would have occurred 'but for' the defendant's actions. If the injury would not have happened without the defendant's conduct, then the defendant's conduct is considered a but-for cause. This test is a preliminary step in establishing legal liability.
