Substantial factor test
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-004744
A legal standard used in tort law to determine causation, particularly when multiple causes contribute to an injury. It asks whether the defendant's conduct was a material element and a contributing cause of the harm. This test is often applied in situations where the "but-for" test of causation is inadequate.
