"But for" test

A legal principle used to determine causation in negligence cases, asking whether an injury would have occurred "but for" the defendant's actions or omissions. If the injury would not have happened without the defendant's conduct, then that conduct is considered a cause-in-fact of the injury. This test is a preliminary step in establishing legal liability.
