"Four-corners" test

Term · Insurance and risk management · MLC-T-INS-001580

A legal principle applied by courts to determine an insurer's duty to defend a policyholder, based solely on the allegations contained within the four corners of the complaint filed against the insured. If the complaint's allegations, taken as true, fall within the scope of coverage, the insurer has a duty to defend. This test limits the court's review to the complaint itself, without considering external evidence.
