Defense clause

A provision within an insurance policy outlining the insurer's duty to defend the insured against lawsuits alleging covered liability. This clause specifies the insurer's obligation to appoint legal counsel and cover defense costs. The duty to defend often arises even if the allegations are groundless, false, or fraudulent.
