Defendant

The party against whom a lawsuit is brought in a court of law. In insurance, the insured often becomes the defendant in a liability claim, and the insurer provides legal defense and pays damages if the insured is found liable. The defendant must respond to the plaintiff's complaint within a specified timeframe.
