Proximate cause

Term · Insurance and risk management · MLC-T-INS-002746

The direct and immediate cause of a loss, without which the loss would not have occurred. It is the active and efficient cause that sets in motion a chain of events leading to the damage or injury. Insurers analyze proximate cause to determine if a loss is covered under the policy, as coverage often depends on whether the peril causing the loss is an insured peril.
