Provocation

An act or series of acts that causes a reasonable person to lose self-control and commit a criminal offense, particularly in cases of assault or homicide. In some jurisdictions, it can reduce the charge from murder to manslaughter if the defendant acted in the heat of passion. The standard for assessing provocation is whether a reasonable person would have been provoked to the same extent.
