Heat of passion

A state of intense emotional arousal, such as rage or terror, that temporarily overwhelms an individual's reason and self-control. In criminal law, acting in the heat of passion, provoked by adequate cause, can reduce a charge of murder to voluntary manslaughter. The provocation must be sufficient to cause a reasonable person to lose self-control, and there must be no cooling-off period between the provocation and the act.
