Hearsay rule

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-002413

The legal principle that prohibits the admission of out-of-court statements offered as evidence to prove the truth of the matter asserted. This rule is based on concerns about the reliability of such statements, as the declarant is not subject to cross-examination. Numerous exceptions to the hearsay rule exist, such as for business records or statements against interest, which are codified in evidentiary codes.
