Complete defense

A legal argument or set of facts that, if proven, entirely absolves a defendant of liability or guilt for the alleged offense. It negates an essential element of the plaintiff's claim or the prosecution's case. Examples include self-defense in an assault case or the statute of limitations in a civil action.
