Double jeopardy

A constitutional protection, guaranteed by the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, that prevents an individual from being prosecuted or punished twice for the same offense after an acquittal or conviction. It also protects against multiple punishments for the same offense. This protection applies only to criminal proceedings and does not bar civil actions for the same conduct.
