Taking the Fifth

To invoke the constitutional privilege against self-incrimination, allowing a person to refuse to answer questions or provide testimony that could be used against them in a criminal proceeding. This right is guaranteed by a provision within the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The privilege applies in any governmental proceeding, including police interrogations, legislative hearings, and civil or criminal trials.
