Taking of hostages

The seizure or detention of a person, accompanied by a threat to kill, injure, or continue to detain the person, in order to compel a third party to do or abstain from doing any act as an explicit or implicit condition for the release of the hostage. This act is a serious international crime, often prosecuted under anti-terrorism laws and international conventions like the International Convention Against the Taking of Hostages.
