Marital privilege

A legal protection that allows a spouse to refuse to testify against their spouse in a legal proceeding, or to prevent their spouse from testifying about confidential communications made during the marriage. There are two main types: spousal testimonial privilege, which prevents testimony against a spouse, and spousal communications privilege, which protects confidential exchanges. These privileges are subject to exceptions, such as cases involving child abuse or crimes committed by one spouse against the other.
