Physician-patient privilege

A legal rule that protects confidential communications between a patient and their physician from disclosure in court proceedings. This privilege encourages patients to be candid with their doctors without fear that their medical information will be revealed. Exceptions to the privilege exist, such as when a patient puts their medical condition at issue in a lawsuit.
