Spousal privilege

A legal doctrine preventing one spouse from being compelled to testify against the other in a legal proceeding and protecting confidential communications made between them during the marriage. The privilege is divided into two types: testimonial privilege, which prevents adverse testimony, and marital communications privilege, which protects private conversations. This privilege does not apply in cases involving crimes committed by one spouse against the other or against their children.
