Separate sovereigns doctrine

A principle in United States constitutional law that allows different sovereign entities, such as a state and the federal government, to prosecute an individual for the same offense without violating the Double Jeopardy Clause. Each sovereign has the power to define offenses against its own laws. This doctrine permits successive prosecutions for acts that violate both state and federal statutes.
