Merger doctrine

A legal principle that prevents a defendant from being convicted of both a lesser included offense and the greater offense when the lesser offense is a necessary component of the greater. This doctrine aims to avoid multiple punishments for the same criminal act. It is often applied in criminal law to prevent double jeopardy.
