Lesser included offense

A crime that is composed entirely of some, but not all, of the elements of a greater crime, and does not require proof of any additional elements. For example, simple assault is a lesser included offense of aggravated assault. A defendant cannot be convicted of both the greater offense and its lesser included offense for the same act.
