Aggravated assault

An assault committed with the intent to cause serious bodily injury, or with the use of a deadly weapon, or under circumstances that demonstrate an extreme indifference to human life. This offense carries more severe penalties than simple assault due to the heightened level of danger or harm involved. State statutes define the specific elements that elevate a simple assault to an aggravated one, often including the victim's status, such as a police officer.
