Affirmative defense

A defense raised by the defendant in a lawsuit that, if proven, defeats the plaintiff's claim, even if the plaintiff's allegations are true. The defendant bears the burden of proof for an affirmative defense. Examples include self-defense in an assault case or the statute of limitations in a contract dispute.
