Failure to state a claim

A legal defense asserted by a defendant, arguing that even if all the factual allegations in the plaintiff's complaint are true, they do not establish a legally recognized cause of action. This defense is typically raised in a motion to dismiss. If successful, the court dismisses the case because the plaintiff has not presented a valid legal basis for relief.
