A legally sufficient reason or rationale for an action, particularly for terminating employment or taking disciplinary measures. To meet this standard, an employer must show that the employee's misconduct or poor performance was serious enough to warrant the action and that a fair investigation was conducted. In unionized settings, the specific criteria for just cause are often defined in the collective bargaining agreement.
